| Purpose/Function | This commission is responsible for researching and reviewing all state laws, regulations, guidelines, policies, and procedures that impact perinatal care and, where appropriate, making recommendations to the legislature and secretary of the Department of Health and Hospitals. In addition, the commission is responsible for providing a plan that the state can adopt to reduce the number of teenage pregnancies, sick infants, and infant mortalities. |

| Notes | Charges & Authorized Projects The Perinatal Commission’s charge is to: Research and review state regulations, guidelines, policies, and procedures that impact perinatal care and make recommendations to the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and the legislature Conduct special studies to inform state efforts to address maternal and infant mortality The Perinatal Commission authorizes three projects: 1-Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative (LaPQC)-provides support to hospitals for continuous quality improvement on perinatal outcomes. 2-Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review (PAMR)-reviews all deaths in women during or within one year of pregnancy, and crafts recommendations for how to prevent future deaths. 3-Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR)-reviews unexpected fetal and infant to better understand why these deaths occur and how to prevent them. Activities Over the past two years,(2018-2020) the work of the commission has centered around three areas of focus: 1) Support the development of policies and initiatives to prevent maternal deaths and life-threatening complications during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and post-partum 2) Continue efforts to strengthen policies related to neonatal and infant health 3) Strengthen the Commission’s ability to inform health policy and effect change |
