How do I order a certified copy of a birth certificate?

The Vital Records Registry of the Louisiana Department of Health maintains birth records only for births that occurred in Louisiana. Currently, the Louisiana Vital Records Registry maintains birth records from 1907 to the present.  Birth records were not required statewide by law until 1918.

Louisiana is a "closed record" state. This means that birth and death certificates are not public records. All requests for birth or death certificates must include proper identification. A list of acceptable identification documents is defined at: http://www.dhh.louisiana.gov/index.cfm/page/636

Information on obtaining birth certificates, forms, instructions, who can order documents, list of regional offices, fees and payments is available from the Vital Records Registry  of the Louisiana Department of Health at: http://new.dhh.louisiana.gov/index.cfm/page/635

The only birth records that are currently available at the Archives prior to 1911 are from Orleans Parish. Statewide birth records (other than Orleans Parish) begin in 1911, but are not comprehensive for all parishes.
