Gov. Edwards Announces Extension Granted For Flood Survivors To File Claims Through The NFIP

For Release On:

February 06, 2017

Baton Rouge:  Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced that FEMA has granted his request to extend the Proof of Loss (POL) deadline an additional 90 days for flood survivors who need extra time to file claims through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The new deadline for homeowners to file is May 10, 2017.

The letter granting the extension is available here.

“This extension is crucial as families continue rebuilding their lives and communities after last year’s historic floods,” said Gov. Edwards. “I am grateful to FEMA for recognizing the hardships that so many of our people are enduring. This additional time to file claims will certainly help ease the burdens that many of them face as they go through this prolonged recovery process.”

This is the third extension for sending POL that has been granted by FEMA. More than 100,000 homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged and 13 lives were lost.

All policyholders are urged to submit their proof of loss as soon as possible. Policyholders can submit their Proof of Loss forms directly to adjusters.

The Edwards administration sent a letter to FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Gerald Stolar requesting the extension on February 2. That letter is available here.
