Initial Unemployment Insurance Claims Drop for Week Ending Dec. 24

For Release On:

December 29, 2016

Baton Rouge:  Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Dec. 24, 2016 decreased to 2,093 from the previous week’s total of 2,637. The shorter work-week due to the Christmas holidays contributed to the over-the-week decrease in initial claims. For the comparable week a year ago, ending Dec. 26, 2015, 2,398 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 2,676 from the previous week’s average of 2,660.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Dec. 24, 2016 decreased to 23,719 from the previous week’s total of 23,892. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable figure of 22,682 for the week ending Dec. 26, 2015.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 23,656 from the previous week’s average of 23,472.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has countless tools both in person and online to help claimants file and process their claims. This is in addition to the agency’s 59 local offices statewide, job fairs, training programs, apprenticeship opportunities and so much more.

In 2016, the LWC’s Incumbent Worker Training Program (IWTP) trained more than 42,700 employees working for more than 150 employers. The incumbents who received a pay increase as a result of this training program received an average increase of 12.5 percent.

Updates to the LWC’s unemployment information processing system are still being implemented. As a result, the following data are not currently available: the break-out of interstate claims, Louisiana unemployment insurance claimants' parish of residence, unemployment insurance claims by industry and UI claimants who have received at least one check during the reference month in Louisiana.
